POMEGRANATE – OTHER REPORTED HEALTH BENEFITS

In both laboratory and preliminary clinical studies involving humans, pomegranate juice has been found to reduce the risk of heart disease and the precursors to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. In particular, tannins such as the punicalagins found in Pomegranate are responsible for reductions in oxidative stress. As noted in our section on Acai, oxidative stress is implicated in a host of diseases. Pomegranate has also demonstrated an ability to lower systolic blood pressure.

Metabolites of Pomegranate juice, ellagitannins, have also demonstrated that they localize in the prostate gland and the colon. The research indicates that there may be indications that Pomegranate juice is effective in combating prostate cancer. Additional studies are underway in a number of countries that are examining the possibility that Pomegranate juice has an impact on diabetes, lymphoma, and prostatic hyperplasia.

ELLAGIC ACID

What is ellagic acid? It is a polyphenol antioxidant that is found in Pomegranate, one of the top three sources in the world. It is this compound of Pomegranate that is attracting the attention of medical researchers.

THE CLINICAL RESEARCH – ELLAGIC ACID

Some of the research that has been conducted, both cellular and in animal studies, has found that ellagic acid may slow the growth of some cancerous tumors that are caused by certain carcinogens. Certainly, there is no reliable evidence at this juncture using human studies that would indicate that ellagic acid will either treat or prevent cancer. There is also some research that it may have such an effect and in particular when combined with anthocyanins.

THE REASON WHY THERE HAVE BEEN MORE CLINICAL STUDIES OF POMEGRANATE vs. ACAI

Acai has just recently exploded onto the international health scene as the #1 superfruit. Pomegranate on the other hand, came to the attention of researchers much earlier. You can bet that since Acai Berry is now listed as the #1 superfruit with Pomegranate a close second, there will be a great deal of research coming with Acai.

THE CLINICAL STUDIES

In laboratory studies, ellagic acid does appear to have some cancer-fighting capabilities. It acts as an antioxidant and has been found to destroy cancer cells. There is also evidence that ellagic acid assists in breaking down some cancer-causing agents in the liver and removes them from the blood.

Certainly, more research will have to be conducted on these issues. It should be noted that although most investigative studies involve animals as a model for such investigations, they are not necessarily going to translate into the same results for humans.

OTHER PURPORTED HEALTH BENFITS-ELLAGIC ACID

Ellagic acid has also been tied to reductions in heart disease, liver problems, and it is said to promote wound healing. One study involving ellagic acid, published in Clinical Nutrition, demonstrated that plaque within the carotid artery cleared after three (3) years of ingestion of Pomegranate.
