Acai May Aid in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, studies suggest that antioxidant nutrients may protect us from certain cancers. People who eat plenty of fruits and vegetables are found to have lower incidences of some types of cancer. Foods high in Vitamin E and Vitamin C are especially helpful to the body by acting directly with free-radicals and possibly restoring cell health. Up to now, few studies have been done to examine the link between antioxidants and breast cancer or its recurrence.

Antioxidant vitamins from your daily intake of fruits and vegetables have been seen to possibly protect against Breast Cancer. This is because of the antioxidants’ ability to lessen oxidative DNA damage. Free radicals can cause oxidative DNA damage, which can lead to cancer risks. You may be able to decrease your cancer risk by modifying your diet to include foods high in antioxidants, which fight free-radicals. For some time now, it has been debated whether dietary factors really can play a part in Breast Cancer prevention. Finally, more studies are taking place to test this theory.

These studies are suggesting that, yes; antioxidants can be a powerful tool in the prevention of Breast Cancer, as well as other types of cancer. Brian Fink, a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, led a study that found postmenopausal women, eating a diet high in flavonoids (antioxidant found in plants, like fruits, vegetables, coffee, and tea) showed a 45% lower Breast Cancer risk.

An article was published this month in the Journal of Nutrition stating that in a recent study, blood tests were done on 300 women- 150 without Breast Cancer and 150 newly diagnosed with the disease. The results of the tests showed high levels of antioxidants in the blood of the women without cancer. Further testing and studies will need to be done before solidifying the results. New studies are being done every day.

In the meantime, it will not hurt to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables so that our bodies have the antioxidants needed to fight cell-damaging free-radicals that can predispose our bodies to certain types of cancers.
